I began Brilliant Reflections with a focus on visual research. Successful for many years in assisting developers refine their products pre-launch, I was intrigued to find better ways to give input to packaging designers. I felt that some sensory techniques used for assessing consumer products, such as food, personal care and household products, might be helpful. I wanted to develop them with a focus on packaging design elements and ways to present those to consumers. I worked with senior qualitative colleagues to combine some sensory thinking and ideas with a qualitative approach to packaging design.

Consumers are very good at reacting to all kinds of stimuli. They know exactly what they want and they are smarter than many companies realise. We have found that you can get significant insights just from what they don’t want in a design.
